Torotoro National Park Day 1

After a hearty breakfast of bread, egg, and chicken soup, we started the tours of rock city tour and then the cave tour. Ciudad de Ita", or "City of Rocks" is a series of caves resembling an ancient city. There are alos rock formations looking like animals or diamonds. Ciudad de Itas" tour starts with a one hour drive into the mountains (max. altitude: 3,800 m) above Torotoro where we did a 2-3 hours hike.

After a lunch/hike, there was a 45-minutes drive to the "Cueva Humajalanta". It took another 20 minutes walk to get to the park office to fit with a hard hat for the caving tour. The cave is 6 km long and 164 m deep - one of the longest and deepest caves in Bolivia, with stalactites and stalagmites, blind fish and waterfalls. The 2 hours hike through the cave is an experience on its own as climbing over big rocks and squeezing myself through narrow passages. The surfaces were slippery, the paths were sometimes so small that I had to wriggle through on my belly, and there were fatal drops. Once we were in, the only way out was to follow the whole path, there was no way to go back on your own due to several slidey bit and large jumps.

Then we walked to the road and were driven back to Torotoro hostel to shower, wash dirty clothes, eat dinner, and rest for the next day’s tours.
